Programmable Thermostats
If properly set, a programmable thermostat can easily repay it's cost in one year.
Why cool an empty house? Let us say no one is home from 8:00am until 5:00pm, the temperature outside is 90º, and you like your house kept at 70º. A programmable thermostat can be set to cut off the system right after you leave for work. It will then stay turned off, not using electricity, until the temperature inside reaches 80º. It will then keep the house at this temperature until 4:00 when it knows you will be home in one hour. It will then cool the house back down to 70º and have it nice and comfortable for when you get home.
